DONOR BOAT |
Zobel Class Fast Patrol Boat |
Arthur of San Lorenzo, ex Puma, a 142ft Zobel Class schnellboot, found on the Itchen river, Southampton, is now to become our donor boat. Her four v20 engines, compressors and all seacocks, exhaust discharge ports and other ancillary useful items will be removed to find a new life aboard S 130. |
During May 2008 we paid a visit to Arthur to inspect the engines and systems and start making plans to move the boat to Plymouth Sound where the process of removing the engines and equipment could begin. |
On Wednesday 10th September 2008 she slipped her mooring of eight years tethered behind MFV Marie, a 60ft ex trawler, for the 138 mile tow to Southdown. We left at 0500 in a gentle force 3 but once at sea, and committed, the wind rose steadily until we found ourselves crossing Lyme Bay with a full force 6 on the nose with many holes to negotiate and steep hills to climb. However, in spite of a parted tow line and a painfully slow passage we were safe and all fast in Southdown by 1700 on Friday 12th. |
Over the winter the process of dismantling Arthurs' two engine rooms in readiness for lifting her engines, equipment and fittings out at Mashfords yard early in 2009. |
12th Febraury 2009 Arthur is towed to Mashfords yard at Cremyll in readiness to be stripped of machinery, equipment and fittings. |
18th February: The engine room covers are lifted off, complete with superstructure, to reveal the treasure below. |
The oil coolers and air start bottles are removed, followed by the first engine to be lifted and transported to the shed. All four engines out by the end of 20th February. |

Compressors and tanks etc. cleared before slipping for the task of drawing propeller shafts and through hull fittings. |
10th April 2009: Last Journey. Having finished removing all the useful gear, Arthur has now been towed up river to be converted to a house boat. |
